Praskov’ja Ivanovna Kovaleva was one of the best opera singers in eighteenth-century Russia. She made her 1779 debut at Kuskovo Theater and over the next 20 years, she was to gain renown in the Kuskovo Theatre, and later in Ostankino. It was around 1780 that she was given the stage name “Zhemchugova” (“The Pearl”).
